VICTOR HUGO ZAYAS | THE MOVEMENT SERIES MOVES INWARD

When surveying the works of painter/sculptor Victor Hugo Zayas, there are two defining connections among them: space and movement. Space as defined by the physical properties of height, width, and depth, as well as the theoretical ideas of space, outlined by the writings of astronomers as far back as ancient Mesopotamia (1000 BCE).  For the whole of Victor Hugo Zayas’ creative life, he has been looking to the stars for guidance, drawn to the works of Carl Sagan, Immanuel Kant, and Isaac Newton to provide defining clues as to what we as humans possess as creatures who perceive, both inwardly and outwardly. As for movement, Victor Hugo explains, that it is an all-encompassing awareness that never leaves him, that we are constantly in motion, all bodies are in movement, both biological and heavenly.

about keen & daring

This site is both an archive and a resource for the writing, design, and marketing created by means of projects with other writers, artists, and musicians. Friends and members of a worldwide community of creatives, my work is inspired by keen and daring individuals who have dedicated their lives to making the world a more constructive and beautiful place. In keeping a public archive of my various collaborations, I hope to celebrate the power of creative mutual aid in a way that is not quite a publication but somewhat.

about me

I am a second-generation arts and culture writer with 20 years of experience as a gallery director and curator.  I have been the Director of saltfineart in Laguna Beach for 15 years and during that time, learned much on the subject of fine art marketing, design, and community collaboration. Having recently gained a Master of Science in Clinical Psychology, I have followed my passion for mental health practices, which have in turn informed my writing on art and music.

On the subject of Art & Bravery

I grew up not fully understanding the heroism of those closest to me. The truth would come in delicate pieces, floating down into my consciousness like pieces of ash, fires set to protect the present by erasing the past. In 2016, my grandfather passed away suddenly from pneumonia in a hospital in Prague leaving behind a tangled network of unanswered questions as vast as his formidable mind. As a young person, he was forced to flee his home city of Prague, immigrating first to allied-controlled Germany in the wake of WWII, then to America, then back to Europe, where he would spend the rest of his life building bridges between Czech people living abroad and those living within the Czech Republic.

His life’s work was only fully known to me after he passed away, when I discovered an overwhelming collection of photographs and personal letters which I painstakingly sorted and translated from Czech to English. The process of reacquainting myself with my favorite person after he was gone from me forever changed my life and my creative process. His influence is everywhere in my writing and community work. He is the inspiration for the idea that, “the daring do.”
